Republicans — Not Obama — More Often on Wrong Side of Public Opinion

Posted by: BuellBoy

Nate SilverFiveThirtyEight/Nate Silver~One of the more commonplace assertions among pundits on the center-right — made rather carelessly by Victor Davis Hanson and more thoughtfully by Jay Cost, is that agenda put forward by Obama and the Democrats is overwhelmingly unpopular and that Democrats are simply getting their comeuppance for having pushed such a liberal set of reforms forward. These claims, however, rely on selective evidence, invariably citing policies like health care and the GM bailouts which are indeed unpopular (strongly so, in some cases), while ignoring many other issues on which Obama has been on the right side of public opinion.

In fact, a more objective and equivocal evaluation of public opinion on more than two dozen specific issues finds that the Republican Congress has far more often been on the wrong side of it. Attempting to be as comprehensive as possible, I’ve identified 25 issues that Obama and the Democrats have made an affirmative effort to push forward since taking office a year ago, and summarized public opinion on each of them. Most of the numbers that I’ve cited come from PollingReport.com.

CBO Report green lights Health Care Reform

CBO says health care bill costs $829B over decade

Health care legislation drafted by a key Senate committee would expand coverage to 94 percent of all eligible Americans at a 10-year cost of $829 billion, congressional budget experts said Wednesday, a preliminary estimate likely to power the measure past a major hurdle within days.

AP Poll: Health care overhaul has a pulse

The fever has broken. The patient is out of intensive care. But if you’re President Barack Obama, you can’t stop pacing the waiting room.
The latest Associated Press-GfK poll (click here for full poll results) has found that opposition to Obama’s health care remake dropped dramatically in just a matter of weeks. Still, Americans remain divided over complex legislation that Democrats are advancing in Congress.

The public is split 40-40 on supporting or opposing the health care legislation, the poll found. An even split is welcome news for Democrats, a sharp improvement from September, when 49 percent of Americans said they opposed the congressional proposals and just 34 percent supported them.

Former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole says “there will be a signing ceremony” for a health care reform bill either late this year or early next.

Secret Service: Facebook Poll No Threat to Obama

Social Media Assassination Poll for Obama Posted on Facebook

Social Media Assassination Poll for Obama Posted on Facebook

Associated Press/Eileen Sullivan—The Secret Service has determined that a juvenile was behind the online survey that asked whether people thought President Barack Obama should be assassinated, an agency spokesman said Thursday.

No criminal charges will be filed against the juvenile or the juvenile’s parents, spokesman Edwin Donovan said. Donovan would not identify the names of the child or parents or say where they are from.

The poll, posted Saturday on Facebook, was taken off the popular social networking site quickly after company officials were alerted to its existence. But, like any threat against the president, Secret Service agents took no chances.

The poll asked respondents “Should Obama be killed?” The choices: No, Maybe, Yes, and Yes if he cuts my health care.

Facebook Poll: “Kill Obama?” Pulled Down, Secret Service Investigating

Posted by Audiegrl

Late last night, blogger GottaLaff at The Political Carnival broke this story and contacted the Secret Service. It’s shocking that some person posted a poll on whether President Obama should be killed.

Now is the time for every sane person on the Internet to stop this madness. Enough is enough. Thanks to bloggers on The Political Carnival, DKos, and Pam’s House Blend, the Secret Service received many calls and the poll was removed by Facebook.

According to Greg Sargent’s Plum Line Blog:

The Secret Service is investigating the circumstances surrounding an eye-opening Facebook poll that asked whether Obama should be assassinated, a Secret Service spokesman confirms to us.

“We are taking the appropriate investigative steps,” the spokesman, Ed Donovan, told our reporter, Amanda Erickson. “We are aware of it.”

-snip-

The poll, of course, is only the latest example of the sort of viral incitement to violence that flares up when the sparks of anti-Obama hatred are fed oxygen by the bellows of the Internets. While anyone can put up such a poll, this kind of stuff is a sign of the moment — as David Kurtz put it, it’s akin to graffiti on the virtual wall of our times.

Talking Points Memo reports that:

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt tells TPM: “The application that enabled a user to create the offensive poll was brought to our attention this morning and was disabled. We’re following up [with] the developer to ensure the offending content has been removed and that they have better procedures in place going forward to monitor their user-generated content.”

The blogger GottaLaff from The Political Carnival received a thank-you call from the Secret Service:

Just now, I got a phone call from the Secret Service. Yes, that Secret Service. It was from a very sweet woman with a very sweet voice. She called to thank me for my screen grab of the poll, and said without it, they wouldn’t have been able to address the matter.

I asked if the reason the poll was removed was due to the Secret Service following up on my call. She said she couldn’t answer that, because it would have been another officer who was working on it, and she simply didn’t know. But she thanked me over and over, emphatically, saying that there would be no way for the Secret Service to catch something like this without assistance. The Internets are too vast for that.

Instead, they rely on people like us to help them out. Sounds awfully grassrootsy, doesn’t it? Almost community service-like. Imagine that.

We would like to thank you too, GottaLaff.

It’s time for all of us to contact the Secret Service anytime we read a threat against the President or his family on the Internet. In this country it is illegal to make a threat against the POTUS. This is the only way we are going to help stop this climate of hate.

HuffingtonPost–Voters in swing states say they are more likely to re-elect Senators who support the Clean Energy Jobs Bill, according to a new poll.

The poll, conducted by the political consulting agency Benenson Strategy Group, interviewed 814 registered voters in 16 swing states.

60 percent of respondents said they were much more likely to re-elect a Senator who supported the energy bill that passed the House in June 2009. Conversely, 52 percent said they would be less likely to vote for Senators who vote against the bill.
