President Obama Signs Legislation

President Obama Signs Legislation Providing Immediate Tax Deductions for Haiti Charitable Contributions January 22, 2010.

President Obama Is Making It Easier for Americans to Support Haiti
blank
In the days since the earthquake in Haiti, Americans have shown their generosity with millions of dollars in donations. Tonight, President Obama signed a bill into law that makes it easier to give. This legislation will allow taxpayers to receive the tax benefit from donations made to the Haiti effort in this tax season, rather than having to wait until they file their 2010 tax returns next year. Specifically, cash donations to charities for the Haitian relief effort given after January 11 and before March 1 of this year may be treated as if the contribution was made on December 31 of last year so that the contribution can be deducted from 2009 income. This measure applies to monetary donations, not goods or services.

Sandra Bullock Gives $1 Million To Doctors Without Borders for Haiti Relief

Posted by: Audiegrl

Award-winning actress and producer Sandra Bullock said Friday she donated $1 million toward Haitian earthquake relief.

Bullock’s contribution went to Doctors Without Borders’ emergency operations in Port-Au-Prince, where three of the organization’s existing facilities were damaged by the magnitude 7.0 quake.

I wanted to ensure that my donation would be used immediately to meet the needs of the Haitian people affected by this catastrophic event,” said Bullock in a statement.

I urge all of my friends and fans around the world to join me collectively to match my contribution or give in any way you can,” she said. “We must act now.”

Earlier Friday, Not On Our Watch, an advocacy and grantmaking group founded by George Clooney, Brad Pitt and others, donated $1 million to Partners in Health. Madonna also announced she gave $250,000 toward the effort as celebrity aid continued to pour into the devastated country.

The international Red Cross estimates 45,000 to 50,000 people were killed in the earthquake, which devastated the Caribbean nation on Tuesday.

CANCELLED!! Tea Party Group To Get ‘Fired Up For Freedom,’ Burn Rep. Perriello In Effigy

Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA)

TPM/Eric Kleefeld—The local Tea Party organization in Danville, Virginia, is taking their opposition to freshman Democratic Rep. Tom Perriello to a whole new level — announcing that they will burn him in effigy, along with a similar image of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, at a rally called “Fired Up For Freedom.”

At this point we feel we have no representation in Congress,” Danville Tea Party chairman Nigel Coleman told the Chatham Star Tribune, with the chief complaint being Perriello’s vote for the House health care bill this past weekend.

Perriello’s office declined to comment to TPM about this.

***TPM Update I***

DCCC chairman Chris Van Hollen has responded in a statement. “These shocking and despicable acts are becoming all too common at extreme right-wing Republican rallies. Hanging Members in effigy or displaying images of Nazi concentration camps on the steps of the Capitol have no place in any debate and Republican Members of Congress must condemn these actions,” said Van Hollen. “While there should be a robust debate about reforming America’s broken health insurance system, violent expressions are beyond the boundaries of a respectful debate. The American people are counting on Republicans to join Democrats in a constructive debate to help President Obama bring about urgently-needed health insurance reform.

***TPM Update II***

TPM: The plan by the Danville TEA Party Patriots to burn Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi in effigy — a sort of Tea-Party Burning Man — has been called off, Greg Sargent reports: “We will not be going forward with the plan,” a crestfallen Coleman told me by phone moments ago. “We had to cancel it. The property owner won’t allow us to do it. The media attention was something that he didn’t want.”

Coleman said he was upset that people had gotten the wrong idea about his plan. “I’m disappointed that the story got out of hand and people misinterpreted something we thought would be a little historical lesson. They made people believe that we were committing an act of violence,” he said, adding that the “they” in question were the “liberal blogs.”

On Nov. 5, Perriello had a conversation with several of the TEA Party members, attempting to explain his position while they talked over him:

Media Matters: Fox News Has Been Attacking the Obama White House Since January 20th

media matters logolargeMedia Matters—Following Anita Dunn’s description of Fox News as an “arm” of the Republican Party, Fox News personalities have suggested or claimed that the White House declared “war” on the network. In response, Media Matters for America has released a video showing the factually inaccurate smears, blatant political organizing, and explicit lobbying that Fox News has engaged in. Many of these activities have been occurring since January 20 and have only increased in frequency as time has passed.

Rachel Maddow Sets the Record Straight on Fox News

Posted by Audiegrl

rachel maddowbuttons211x320Last night on The Rachel Maddow Show, Maddow was joined by her MSNBC colleague Keith Olbermann to set the record straight on White House criticism of Fox News and the dishonest campaign Fox has launched to dispute those claims.

Using both photographs and video as evidence, Maddow examines the way Fox functioned as a right-arm of the Bush Administration & the Republican Party, who at the same time, excluding journalists and media outlets that were perceived by the White House as being left-wing.

She points out that the big difference between this administration and the last one, is that President Obama’s White House has also met with conservative columnists and journalists as well as progressive outlets. President Bush, on the other hand, froze out The New York Times for all eight years of his administration, never once giving them an interview. Going as far as being caught on a hot mic during his 2000 campaign saying:

There’s Adam Clymer — major league a$$hole — from the New York Times,” Bush said.

    Yeah, big time,” returned Cheney.

President Bush also froze out MSNBC toward the end of his last term, which WH Press Secretary Dana Perrino readily admits on a Fox interview.

Hannity's faux sign

Hannity's faux sign

So essentially, the purpose of all the faux outrage from Faux News is to obfuscate the simple and widely accepted fact that even their ‘straight news‘ shows are done with a biased political agenda in mind. President Bush 41, being interviewed regarding the lack of civility in politics, decided to prove he agrees with his son on progressive pundits, by calling Maddow and Olbermann ‘sick puppies‘. With all due respect, Sir, you are not helping things.

What I’d really like to know is how can we get some of that famous peach cobbler Rachel and Keith talked about? Bloggers need love too. 😉

Gay rights advocates march on DC, divided on Obama– + Obama Gives Human Rights Campaign Keynote

Posted by Audiegrl

WASHINGTON – Thousands of gay and lesbian activists converge for a march from the White House to the Capitol, demanding that President Barack Obama keep his promises to push for civil rights protections from the federal government.

Rainbow flags and homemade signs dotted the crowds as people chanted “Hey, Obama, let mama marry mama” and “We’re out, we’re proud, we won’t back down.” Many children were also among the protesters.

A long journey- 1979

Some participants in the National Equality March woke up energized by Obama’s blunt pledge to end the ban on gays serving openly in the military during a speech to the nation’s largest gay rights group Saturday night. The president also said he would work to ban workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and to give same-sex couples the same civil rights as straight couples.

“I’m here with you in that fight,” Obama said. He acknowledged some had grown impatient that he wasn’t pushing for changes faster but urged advocates to continue pressing him and Congress to act.

Obama’s political energies have been focused on two wars, the economic crisis and health care reform, though he pledged “unwavering” commitment even as he wrestled with those problems.

March organizer Cleve Jones, creator of the AIDS Memorial Quilt and a protege of gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk, said he had initially discouraged a rally earlier in the year. But he and others began to worry Obama was backing away from his campaign promises.
“Since we’ve seen that so many times before, I didn’t want it to happen again,” he said. “We’re not settling. There’s no such thing as a fraction of equality.”

gayrights365Gay.com/—The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, announced today that President Barack Obama will deliver the keynote address at the 13th Annual National Dinner on Saturday, October 10th, in Washington, D.C.

U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy will also present the first-ever Edward M. Kennedy National Leadership Award to Judy and Dennis Shepard. The award is named in honor of the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA), a champion in the fight for LGBT equality.

gayweddingsmallWe are honored to share this night with President Obama, who has called upon our nation to embrace LGBT people as brothers and sisters,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “It is fitting that he will speak to our community on the night that we pay tribute to his friend and mentor Senator Edward Kennedy, who knew that as president, Barack Obama would take on the unfinished business of this nation – equal rights for the LGBT community, and for every person who believes in liberty and justice for all.”
