The Obama’s Welcome Broadway to the White House

Posted by: Audiegrl

Tonight the President and First Lady continued their White House music series with “A Broadway Celebration” to honor the arts and demonstrate the importance of arts education. The White House has consistently looked to support the arts even during these tough times. As the President has said, “the arts are not somehow apart from our national life, the arts are at the heart of our national life.” This evening’s event was the sixth in a series that showcases the music that has shaped and enriched our country – preceded by tributes to jazz, country, Latin, classical and the music of the Civil Rights Movement.

This afternoon, dance students from the local Duke Ellington School of the Arts and the Joy of Motion Dance Center will work with Tony Award winning choreographer Jerry Mitchell on a segment from the Broadway show Hairspray. The youth ensemble will come to the White House to perform in a special dress rehearsal for the First Lady, their parents and teachers, before joining the ranks of some of Broadway’s most prestigious performers.

Tonight’s performances included selections from American musicals that reflect the spirit, energy and ambition of America, featuring Nathan Lane, Idina Menzel, Audra McDonald, Elaine Stritch, Brian d’Arcy James, Chad Kimball, Tonya Pinkins, Marvin Hamlisch, Karen Olivo, Assata Alston, Danielle Arci and Constantine Rousouli under the direction of George C. Wolfe.

First Lady Michelle Obama Sees Broadway Musical ‘Memphis

Posted by: Audiegrl

First Lady Michelle Obama traveled to New York Sunday to see a musical on Broadway. Memphis is a musical by David Bryan (music and lyrics) and Joe DiPietro (lyrics and book) based on a concept by George W. George. It is loosely based on Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play black music in the 1950s. It was staged during the 2003-04 season at both the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts and TheatreWorks in Mountain View, California and opened on Broadway on October 19, 2009.

Directed by Christopher Ashley and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, the Broadway production began previews at the Shubert Theatre on September 23, 2009 and officially opened on October 19. The cast included many of the cast members from the pre-Broadway productions, including Chad Kimball as Huey Calhoun and Montego Glover as Felicia Farrell. The creative team included costume designer Paul Tazewell, scenic designer David Gallo, and lighting designer Howell Binkley. The Broadway production won Best Musical in the Live Theatre division of the Golden Icon Awards.

Comedian George Lopez, actress Eva Longoria Parker and actor Jimmy Smits were last night's hosts

Tuesday night the President and First Lady hosted the third installment of the White House Music Series, this one celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Fiesta Latina brought some of the country’s best Latin music performers to the White House, including: Mark Anthony, Gloria Estefan, Jose Feliciano, Pete Escovedo, Thalía, Tito “El Bambino,” Aventura, Los Lobos and Sheila E., with hosts Jimmy Smits, Eva Longoria and George Lopez.

In his remarks at the event, President Barack Obama said of the genre: “In the end, what makes Latin music great is the same thing that’s always made America great — the unique ability to celebrate our differences while creating something new.”

Enjoy some snapshots from “In Performance at the White House: Fiesta Latina” and in case you missed the livestream, you can still catch the program on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 8 p.m. ET on PBS stations nationwide (check your local listings).

Justice Sotomayor Salsa Dances Too!

Posted by Audiegrl

I Live Salsa—A couple days ago we got to see Justice Sotomayor have a little impromptu salsa on the dance floor. Led by Actor Esai Morales, the dance took place during an annual gala hosted by the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts (NHFA). The event was titled Noche Musicál and held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Washington Life TV was there to capture the event.

It’s great to watch our politicians (and Supreme Justices) in normal settings. It shows their human side and in this case, gives us a chance to look beyond the brutal confirmation hearings, and see the brilliant Justice Sotomayer relaxed and having fun. She is really good! Not to mention, she is dancing in high-heals on a recently broken ankle. Wow!

But in all honesty, who could turn down a dance with Esai Morales? I mean really… 🙂
