Letterman Had a Fling with Another Staffer + Leno makes Dave “Topic A”

More details are emerging:

Source: Letterman Had a Fling with Another Staffer:

“with one of his peers, a woman close to him, not an intern.”

A former Late Show with David Letterman staffer tells PEOPLE that the talk show host had a sexual relationship with one of the show’s employees in the late 1990s.

The source says the relationship occurred before Stephanie Birkitt, 34, the woman at the center of the Letterman scandal, worked on the show and involved a different female staffer.

“I’m not surprised this came out,” the former staffer tells PEOPLE of Letterman’s admission Thursday night that he had “had sex with women who work for me on this show.”

“Even the interns knew stuff like that was going on,” says the source.

The basic story goes like this (from the NY Times):

David Letterman Reveals Extortion Attempt

David Letterman said on his show on Thursday that he had been the victim of an extortion attempt over charges of sexual affairs with staff members, claims that he conceded were true.

Mr. Letterman said on “The Late Show,” on CBS, that he had been approached by a person who wanted $2 million not to go public with information that Mr. Letterman had been in sexual relationships with women who work on his show.

Mr. Letterman said that he had testified before a grand jury and had admitted to the relationships.

“My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would,” he said on the show. “I feel like I need to protect these people. I need to certainly protect my family.”

BUT, the plot thickens…

From TMZ: Woman in Letterman Case Lived with Suspect

One of the women at the center of the David Letterman alleged extortion case is Stephanie Birkitt, his former assistant — according to the search warrant obtained by FOX 5 New York. And, the warrant says, Birkitt was the suspect’s girlfriend and we’ve learned she was living with him until recently.

Soooo, Stephanie Birkitt, who is, if I’m not mistaken, the often seen “page” wearing an oversized Late Show varsity jacket who would come down the isle and hand Dave the envelopes with the prizes for the audience

44-UPDATE
Birkitt, Letterman’s former assistant who has made several appearances on the “Late Show,” lived with alleged blackmailer Robert “Joe” Halderman, who allegedly “was in possession of Birkitt’s diary, correspondence and photos — which he says incriminated Letterman,” according to TMZ.

Obama Leads Letterman to Ratings Win

President Obama and Dave Letterman

President Obama and Dave Letterman

We’ve been told by the pundits on cable news, that in their conventional wisdom, President Barack Obama is totally over-exposed. Right? Well no one gave that memo to Dave Letterman’s Late Show audience.

According to the New York Times, the night Obama appeared was the most-watched “Late Show” in four years, with a total of 7.218 million viewers. So the conventionally wise pundits in Washington, might want to re-think that memo. Either that or start calling it ‘conventional speculation‘.

New York Times/Bill Carter—Landing an appearance by the president seems to be a game-changer at least for one show in late-night television. On Monday night, President Obama lifted David Letterman to his most-watched “Late Show” in four years, with a total of 7.218 million viewers.

That was more than enough to propel Mr. Letterman, on CBS, past his late-night rival on NBC, Conan O’Brien, in every audience category for the first time since Mr. O’Brien became host of the “Tonight Show” in June.

It also gave Mr. Letterman a bigger audience Monday than his longtime rival Jay Leno, whose new prime-time hour on NBC hit its lowest number to date, with 5.81 million viewers. (Mr. Leno can still claim precedence in one area, however. When he was still host of “Tonight” and Mr. Obama made the first late-night appearance by any sitting president last March, Mr. Leno attracted 14.6 million viewers.)

Obama Tells Letterman: I Was Black Before the Election

President Obama and Dave Letterman

President Obama and Dave Letterman

CBS—Addressing suggestions that recent criticism of his health care reform efforts has been grounded in racism, President Obama this afternoon quipped, “I think it’s important to realize that I was actually black before the election.”

The comment, which the president made in an afternoon taping of CBS’ “The Late Show,” promoted laughter from the audenice and this response from host David Letterman: “How long have you been a black man?”

Mr. Obama said the notion that racism is playing a role in the criticism, which has been voiced by former President Jimmy Carter and others, is countered in part by the fact that he was elected in the first place – which, he said, “tells you a lot about where the country’s at.”
