Little-Known Black History Fact: Molly Williams

A slave named Molly Williams was the first known female firefighter in the United States. Little is known about her life, but female firefighters know her heroic story.

Owned by a New York merchant named Benjamin Aymar, Williams became part of the Oceanus Engine Company firehouse in 1815 and would be known as Volunteer Number 11. The members of the house credited her for being as tough as the male firefighters. She would fight amongst them in a calico dress and checked apron.

Besides the bucket brigades, Molly pulled the pumper to fires through the deep snowdrifts of the blizzard of 1818 to save towns. On December 27, 1819, the Fire Department reported that the fire buckets were rapidly being superseded by the use of hose, so the era of fire buckets ended.

Even as a slave, Williams had gained the respect of her fellow firefighters. Her story and strength paved the way for other women, including one the first paid Black female firefighters and the most tenured in the country – Toni McIntosh of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who served for over 11 years.

Today there are many African-American women working as career firefighters and officers in the United States, along with a number of counterparts in the volunteer ranks. The African American Fire Fighter Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to collecting, conserving and sharing the heritage of African American firefighters.

The Museum is housed at old Fire Station 30. This station, which was one of two segregated fire stations in Los Angeles, between 1924 and 1955, was established in 1913, to serve the Central Ave community.

CANCELLED!! Tea Party Group To Get ‘Fired Up For Freedom,’ Burn Rep. Perriello In Effigy

Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA)

TPM/Eric Kleefeld—The local Tea Party organization in Danville, Virginia, is taking their opposition to freshman Democratic Rep. Tom Perriello to a whole new level — announcing that they will burn him in effigy, along with a similar image of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, at a rally called “Fired Up For Freedom.”

At this point we feel we have no representation in Congress,” Danville Tea Party chairman Nigel Coleman told the Chatham Star Tribune, with the chief complaint being Perriello’s vote for the House health care bill this past weekend.

Perriello’s office declined to comment to TPM about this.

***TPM Update I***

DCCC chairman Chris Van Hollen has responded in a statement. “These shocking and despicable acts are becoming all too common at extreme right-wing Republican rallies. Hanging Members in effigy or displaying images of Nazi concentration camps on the steps of the Capitol have no place in any debate and Republican Members of Congress must condemn these actions,” said Van Hollen. “While there should be a robust debate about reforming America’s broken health insurance system, violent expressions are beyond the boundaries of a respectful debate. The American people are counting on Republicans to join Democrats in a constructive debate to help President Obama bring about urgently-needed health insurance reform.

***TPM Update II***

TPM: The plan by the Danville TEA Party Patriots to burn Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi in effigy — a sort of Tea-Party Burning Man — has been called off, Greg Sargent reports: “We will not be going forward with the plan,” a crestfallen Coleman told me by phone moments ago. “We had to cancel it. The property owner won’t allow us to do it. The media attention was something that he didn’t want.”

Coleman said he was upset that people had gotten the wrong idea about his plan. “I’m disappointed that the story got out of hand and people misinterpreted something we thought would be a little historical lesson. They made people believe that we were committing an act of violence,” he said, adding that the “they” in question were the “liberal blogs.”

On Nov. 5, Perriello had a conversation with several of the TEA Party members, attempting to explain his position while they talked over him:

Randall Terry Urges “Burn In Hell Protests”, Calls for Burning Pelosi and Reid in Effigy on Halloween

Posted by Audiegrl

Randall Terry

AP/Ann Sanner—Anti-abortion activist Randall Terry is calling on people to burn effigies of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid this Halloween, as part of a “Burn in Hell” video contest to protest the health care legislation in Congress.

Terry, founder of Operation Rescue, said Tuesday that the contest serves as a political and spiritual statement that “gives people a chance to peacefully vent their rage.”

If Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid force us to pay for child killing and they die unrepentant, they will burn in hell for this,” Terry said in a telephone interview.

A YouTube video of the contest instructions shows how to print a poster of Reid and Pelosi and construct a stand for it. The clip shows a person dousing the Democratic leaders’ images with flammable liquid. The next scene shows their picture going up in flames. People are then encouraged to take pictures, record and submit online the footage of their Oct. 31 protests.

No, this is not a threat to their body,” an unidentified man says in the instructional video, “but it is a threat to their soul.”

Terry insisted the contest was not a threat to Reid or Pelosi. He contended that the Democrats’ plan to overhaul health care would allow federal funding of abortion.

Operation Rescue Halloween: Nancy Pelosi Burn in Hell Contest

pelosi-reidsmiling

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid

Colorado Independent/John TomasicRandall Terry, the founder of fanatical anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, is sending around an email to supporters asking them to burn Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in effigy as part of a national Halloween protest and video contest. The email and video rallying supporters is characterized by an ironic tone that serves only to heighten the threatening factor that has come to characterize the organization and its actions.

Of the many notable features of the Operation Rescue call-out is the explicit references it makes to major mainstream U.S. corporations FedEx Kinkos, Home Depot and Wal-Mart. The references have the feel of embedded advertising. Do the companies know Operation Rescue is sending them their “Nancy Pelosi Burn in Hell” business? Do they want that business?

FedEx spokesperson Jenny Robertson told the Colorado Independent that the company had no part in the video.

Fed Ex is in no way affiliated with [the Terry project] and did not provide permission to film the video in one of our centers. They probably took that video in the store very quickly and there was no time to stop it“.

And an ironical disclaimer on the video:

Legal Mumbo Jumbo: Obey local laws on open flames; be careful; if under 18, do not burn Nancy Pelosi in effigy unless your mom or dad is with you, and gives you permission, and strikes the match; do not burn yourself; do not burn another human being; do not burn small animals; do not burn large animals; do not burn anyone from PETA; and remember: this is not a threat to Nancy Pelosi’s or Harry Reid’s person…it is a prophetic witness of what awaits them when they die if they do not repent for this horrific sin.

CNN Can’t Have It Both Ways — Lou Dobbs vs. Latino In America

Basta Lou Dobbs: Enough is Enough!

Translation: Hypocrisy: CNN releases documentary "Latino in America" while Hispanics around the country protest against the anti-Latino propaganda of Lou Dobbs

New York Times/Brian Stelter—Instead of being simply a draw for Hispanic viewers, CNN’s four-hour documentary, “Latino in America,” turned into a political rallying cry for activist groups who are calling on the cable news channel to fire Lou Dobbs, a veteran anchor with well-known views on immigration.

An array of minorities held small protests in New York and other cities on Wednesday, the first night of CNN’s presentation. They are trying to highlight what they say are years of lies about immigration by Mr. Dobbs, who anchors the 7 p.m. hour on CNN.

CNN, a unit of Time Warner, has not commented on the protests or covered them on its news programs. Isabel Garcia, one of the activists featured in the documentary said she tried to raise what she called Mr. Dobbs’s “hatred” on one of the channel’s news programs Wednesday, but her remarks were cut from the interview.

The hypocrisy, critics say, lies in CNN’s decision to woo Hispanic viewers with a prime-time documentary while still giving Mr. Dobbs a nightly forum. Roberto Lovato, a founding member of Presente.org, a Latino advocacy group, said in a statement, “We won’t allow the network to court us as viewers while, at the same time, they allow Dobbs to spread lies and misinformation about us each night.”

Latino In America” Not The Ratings Hit “Black In America” Was

Huffington Post/Danny Shea—CNN’s “Latino in America” received a lot of attention, particularly from observers interested in the discord between the special and Lou Dobbs’ perceived anti-immigration stance.

The attention wasn’t enough to make it a ratings hit, however.

The two-part special, which aired Wednesday and Thursday nights from 9-11 PM, drew significantly fewer viewers than the summer’s “Black in America,” and led the network to third place in both total viewers and the A25-54 demographic both nights.

In his piece, The Dobbs Factor, blogger Matt Yglesias writes:

Immigrants Rally In Lou Dobbs Masks

Immigrants Rally In Lou Dobbs Masks

“Dobbs has a long history of spreading hate and paranoia. He has routinely discussed the North American Union conspiracy theory, incorrectly claimed that undocumented immigrants drain social services and don’t pay taxes, and repeatedly amplified the falsehood that undocumented immigrants are disproportionately violent. He has been an unrepentant purveyor of hateful attacks, fraudulently claiming, for example, that immigrants are spreading leprosy and seek to reconquer the southwestern United States.

For all that, if CNN wants to stand by Dobbs then, fine, they should stand by Dobbs. But if they want to stand by Dobbs then they should stand by Dobbs and feature him prominently in their four-hour “Latino in America” documentary. After all, from what you can see watching the network day-to-day the executives at CNN think Dobbs has a credible and important perspective on this issue. Instead, they just kind of want to sweep the crazy uncle under the rug for the purposes of a big special, and then trot him back out again when everything’s back to normal.”

Lou Dobbs and his wife Debi, in the kitchen of their New Jersey farmhouse.

In a 2007 60 Minutes interview, Leslie Stahl got a chance to talk to both Lou and Debi Dobbs who have been married for over 25 years:

Lesley, I have worked with migrant workers in the fields. I’m probably one of the few people in the debate who actually has. I’ve got the greatest respect for those folks. Hard-working, decent, and back-breaking work,” Dobbs tells Stahl.

If that pat on the back is surprising, given the tone of his show, there’s something even more surprising, something he never brings up: the fact that his wife Debi is Mexican-American.

When he is criticized, as he has been, and even accused of being racist as he has been, what goes on inside of you?” Stahl asks Debi Dobbs.

It used to bother me. But now, it doesn’t bother me at all. I know he’s not. People that know him know he’s not. Sometimes I find it amusing,” she replies.

Who Is BastaDobbs.com?

bastadobbsphoto1BastaDobbs.com exists to change how the media reports on Latinos and immigrants in the United States, starting with the worst offenders: Lou Dobbs and his network, CNN. We focus on Lou Dobbs because he, more than any other media personality, has obsessed about and given voice to the most extreme views about immigrants and Latinos. And yet, because CNN refuses to translate Dobbs into Spanish, too few Latinos and immigrants are even aware of the role he plays in spreading fear and hatred in our communities.

NJ Law Enforcement Appear to Contradict Dobbs’ Version of Gunfire Incident

New Jersey state police seem to be contradicting CNN Host Lou Dobbs’ account of a gunfire incident near his Sussex County, New Jersey, house.

lou-dobbsOn Monday on his radio show, Dobbs stated that “my wife has now been and I have been shot at.” The alleged incident, which Dobbs had reported to the New Jersey State Police, took place three weeks prior to the October 26 broadcast of the Lou Dobbs Show, and Dobbs told his listeners that it had “followed weeks and weeks of threatening phone calls.” Dobbs’ discussion of the incident during his radio show also included mention of both longtime critic and FOX host Geraldo Rivera and the immigrant advocacy organizations calling for his removal from CNN including the National Council of La Raza, America’s Voice and other “ethnocentric interest groups.”

Without specifying who he suspects of making the alleged threats, he also said on his radio show that “They’ve threatened my wife, they’ve now fired a shot at my house while my wife was standing next to the car.” Concluding with a call for “truth, justice and the American way,” Dobbs cautioned “if anybody thinks that we’re not engaged in the battle for the soul of this country right now, you’re sorely mistaken.” And during an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Thursday, Dobbs spoke again about the gunfire incident, linking it to “threatening phone calls tied to the positions I’ve taken on illegal immigration.”

Drop Dobbs Campaign: CNN Pressured to Fire Lou Dobbs

Lou Dobbs proudly buying Obama Waffles at the Values Voter Summit in 2008

www.DropDobbs.com—-Over the years, Lou Dobbs has consistently used his CNN platform to spread hatred and fear. He played a critical role in skewing the immigration reform debate in 2006, leading to the derailment of that effort, and his obsession with the issue of immigration and with defeating immigration reform continues unabated. Adding to his repertoire of hate and fearmongering, he has recently aligned himself with the “birther” conspiracists and their racially tinged attack on the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s presidency. From his CNN platform, he has bolstered the claims of those on the fringe by asserting repeatedly that President Obama has failed to produce adequate proof that he was born in the United States. His recent focus on the birth certificate conspiracy issue has reinforced what immigration reform proponents have long known — that Dobbs has a long history of the worst kind of pandering by promoting hate and ethnic and racial division.

Dobbs has promoted the work of hate groups, spread racially charged conspiracy theories including about Obama’s birth certificate, railed against “ethnocentric special interests,” and accused the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of being sympathetic to “Mexico’s export of drugs and illegal aliens.” It is time to highlight the damage Dobbs does and the threat he poses, and it is time to demand accountability from advertisers who, by purchasing airtime on his show, actively support his hate speech. When advertisers sponsor Lou Dobbs, this is what they are paying for:

Dobbs advanced racially charged conspiracy theories about Obama’s birth certificate.

Dobbs has close ties to “hate group” FAIR.

Dobbs said Sotomayor nomination was “absolute pandering to the Hispanics.”

Dobbs declared “Mexico has become our enemy.”

Dobbs smeared U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as “interested in the export of American capital and production to Mexico, and Mexico’s export of drugs and illegal aliens.”

Dobbs fearmongered about Mexican “reconquista” plot.

Dobbs aired hate group graphic to illustrate “the Vicente Fox Aztlan tour.”

Dobbs spread leprosy falsehood in claiming “invasion of illegal aliens” threatening Americans’ “health.”

Dobbs asked if Obama is “pandering to ethnocentric special interests again” by accepting Richardson’s endorsement.

Dobbs praised Philadelphia English-only sign ruling as “a defeat for ethnocentric special interests.”

This is why we have joined together to launch the DropDobbs campaign — to let companies know that their continued financial support of his show makes them complicit in the hate speech that he promotes.

Please join us. CALL on advertisers to drop their sponsorship of CNN’s Lou Dobbs Tonight.

waffles_phixrLou Dobbs buys ‘Obama Waffles’ featuring racist, stereotyped images sold at Values Voter Summit in 2008. At the Values Voter Summit this weekend, vendors sold an item called “Obama Waffles” featuring a racist cartoon of then Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) on the box front — with “popping eyes and big, thick lips” — and another image of him wearing an Arab-like headdress on its top flap. Its creators, Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, said it was meant as “political satire,” and sold the box for $10 from a booth at the Family Research Council event. CNN’s Lou Dobbs stopped by the booth and exclaimed, “My wife will love this!”

On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for “Open Border fiesta Waffles” that says it can serve “4 or more illegal aliens.” The recipe includes a tip: “While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?”

The American News Project stopped by the booth to ask some questions of ‘Obama Waffes’ creators, Bob DeMoss and Mark Whitlock. They seemed to think their creation was really funny and creative. {{sigh}}

According to Roberto Lavato,

“The movement to drop Dobbs marks a critical shift in the direction of Latino activism in the United States. It was previewed in 2006, when media and technology helped move thousands to march through the streets, waving flags, beating drums and demanding change. And now, as the destructive role that the national media can play in spreading myths and misinformation becomes painfully clear, we are witnessing a new age of Latino media activism. These battles will be fought through Internet organizing, on cell phones via text messaging, and on blogs as much as in the streets. Paradoxically, we have no one to thank for this new movement more than Lou Dobbs. The Most Dangerous Man for Latinos in America may do as much as anyone to unite us in our ongoing struggle for civil rights.”
