44-D’s Twenty-Five Days of Christmas Music Videos (Dec 12th)

Feliz Navidad Performed by José Feliciano

Feliz Navidad” is a Christmas song written in 1970 by the Puerto Rican singer-songwriter José Feliciano. With its simple Spanish chorus (the traditional Christmas/New Year greeting, “Feliz Navidad, próspero año y felicidad” or “Merry Christmas, prosperous year and happiness“) and equally simple English verse (“I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart“), it has become a classic Christmas pop song in the United States, Canada and throughout the Spanish-speaking world.

Feliciano’s version of “Feliz Navidad” (in which he plays both an acoustic guitar and a Puerto Rican cuatro) is one of the most downloaded and aired Christmas songs in the United States and Canada. It was also recognized by ASCAP as one of the top 25 most played and recorded Christmas songs around the world.

Lyrics

Feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad!
Feliz Navidad, prospero año felicidad!
Feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad!
Feliz Navidad, prospero año felicidad!
I want to wish you a Merry Christmas!
With lots of presents to make you happy!
I want to wish you a Merry Christmas!
From the bottom of my heart!
I want to wish you a Merry Christmas!
With mistletoe and lots of cheer!
With lots of laughter through out the years!
From the bottom of my heart!
Feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad!
Feliz Navidad, prospero año felicidad!
Feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad!
Feliz Navidad, prospero año felicidad!
Feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad!
Feliz Navidad, prospero año felicidad!
Feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad!
Feliz Navidad, prospero año felicidad!

Tuesday night the President and First Lady hosted the third installment of the White House Music Series, this one celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Fiesta Latina brought some of the country’s best Latin music performers to the White House, including: Mark Anthony, Gloria Estefan, Jose Feliciano, Pete Escovedo, Thalía, Tito “El Bambino,” Aventura, Los Lobos and Sheila E., with hosts Jimmy Smits, Eva Longoria and George Lopez.

In his remarks at the event, President Barack Obama said of the genre: “In the end, what makes Latin music great is the same thing that’s always made America great — the unique ability to celebrate our differences while creating something new.”

Enjoy some snapshots from “In Performance at the White House: Fiesta Latina” and in case you missed the livestream, you can still catch the program on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 8 p.m. ET on PBS stations nationwide (check your local listings).
