First Lady Michelle Obama Celebrates National Mentoring Month

Posted by: Audiegrl

January is National Mentoring Month and this afternoon President Obama and the First Lady will welcome mentors and young Americans from around the country. As we gather in the East Room, organizations and community groups dedicated to supporting our nation’s young people will come together to reaffirm the importance of mentorship. The President will also announce the White House Mentorship Program for 20 young men from local high schools. Each student was nominated by his school and will be paired with an Administration staffer for one year. This program will allow the participants to serve our local community and students will be encouraged to pursue excellence in school as well as expand their horizons as they are introduced to numerous opportunities for personal development, including career skills. Mentorship has long been a priority for both the President and Mrs. Obama, as a part of their commitment to their community and personal responsibility. The First Lady launched her initiative for young women this past November and they’re already off to a great start. Check out a video of the First Lady and senior Administration women on a mentoring trip to Denver to see this initiative in action.

3 arrested: terror cell near Denver busted.

posted by GeoT

(insert quote from Dick Cheney here)

“When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry,”

Don’t worry Dick, it’s possible to uphold the Constituion, the Geneva Convention AND protect America… never thought of that, did ya’?

FBI agents arrest reputed Al Qaeda terror cell operative Najibullah Zazi in Aurora, Colo.

FBI agents arrest reputed Al Qaeda terror cell operative Najibullah Zazi in Aurora, Colo.

DENVER – The FBI arrested a 24-year-old Colorado man on charges of making false statements to federal agents in an ongoing terror investigation, and supporting documents contend the man admitted receiving weapons and explosives training from al-Qaida in Pakistan.
Najibullah Zazi of the Denver suburb of Aurora was arrested late Saturday after undergoing three days of questioning by the FBI. Zazi, a legal permanent resident from Afghanistan, was due to appear in federal court on Monday.

FBI: Notes on bomb-making in Zazi’s handwriting

DENVER – Investigators said they found notes describing how to make bombs in the handwriting of an airport shuttle driver arrested as part of a terrorism investigation, and they also discovered his fingerprints on materials — batteries and a scale — that could be used to make explosives.

Sound familiar? Colorado Democratic headquarters vandalized

Provided by Thing Progress

Posted by Audiegrl

A “vandalism spree” hit the Colorado Democratic Party headquarters in Denver today, where the “vandal allegedly used a hammer to smash” 11 windows. Party Chairwoman Pat Waak attributed the violence to the intensity surrounding the health care debate, saying, “Clearly there’s been an effort on the other side to stir up hate. I think this is the consequence of it.” Waak estimated the damage at approximately $11,000. The Denver Police Department reportedly has a man in custody regarding the incident.–By Amanda Terkel @ Think Progress

What if someone had been inside headquarters? The Southern Poverty Law Center has made things pretty clear where things are heading. How soon will it be before someone gets hurt? When will the Republican leadership stand up to the fringe elements of their party? Judging from Senator Chuck Grassly’s performance today, no time soon. When faced with a constituent that said during a townhall today: “The president of the United States, that’s who you should be concerned about. Because he’s acting like a little Hitler,” said Tom Eisenhower, a World War II veteran. “I’d take a gun to Washington if enough of you would go with me.” Grassly said nothing.

More from Think Progress: In a statement, Doug Pennington, the Assistant Director of Communications at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said that “Senator Grassley should have heavily criticized that statement. He should have told Mr. Eisenhower that such barely veiled threats against the President are unpatriotic and repugnant to the American way of life.” Pennington added that “It was a credit to the Senator’s audience that they booed Mr. Eisenhower, but Senator Grassley also has a responsibility as an elected official to categorically denounce Mr. Eisenhower’s statement and the sentiment behind it.”

****Update from Talking Points Memo
Late Update: OK, the plot thickens…Gawker asserts that Ariel Attack is actually the same person as Maurice, noting the facts that only one person has been arrested, and that the anarchist posting says Ariel “is listed in the jail records and media under her birth name.” It seems like that’s probably right.

Assuming that’s true, there’s a broader implication for the story. It seemed to us in writing this post earlier that the goal of the attack was to discredit conservatives, by getting them blamed for it. That was because the one person who had been reliably reported to have been arrested had a background working for a group supportive of Democrats. But now, given that the person arrested has anarchist ties and is on the record as a vocal left-wing opponent of Obama, it looks like that interpretation was wrong. It now seems more likely that the goal was more straight-forward: to express anger at Obama and the Democrats.
