HP—During an interview on Thursday with conservative talk radio host Rusty Humphries, former Governor Sarah Palin joined the ‘birther‘ movement — those who doubt the authenticity of President Obama’s birth certificate, thus calling into question the legitimacy of his presidency.
About 9 minutes into the conversation (which began with a rendition of the song “Sarah, Queen Of The Wild Frontier“) Humphries asked if Palin would “make the birth certificate an issue” if she ran in 2012.
“I think the public rightfully is still making it an issue.” Palin said. “I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t know if I would have to bother to make it an issue, because I think that members of the electorate still want answers.”
Humphries pressed on: “Do you think it’s a fair question to be looking at?”
Palin answered that she did think it was fair. “I think past association and past voting records — all of that is fair game.” She went on to explain that the reason she thought it was fair game, is because of the way people went after “the weird conspiracy theory freaky thing that people talk about that Trig isn’t my real son — ‘You need to produce his birth certificate, you need to prove that he’s your kid,’ which we have done.”
“Maybe we can reverse that,” she said.

Update: Lame Back-track
TPM reports: Palin has done a pseudo-backtrack in her Facebook account, denying that she in any way called on Obama to produce his birth certificate or suggested he wasn’t born in the United States — which would seem to contradict the plain text of what she said in the interview:
Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask… which they have repeatedly. But at no point – not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews – have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States.
