Film Review: JFK: 3 Shots That Changed America

Review by TV Columnist Kevin McDonough

kennedyjackjackieOK, I groaned a little when I got the press material for “JFK: 3 Shots That Changed America“. I thought I had seen every scrap of footage related to the Kennedy assassination far too many times already.

Boy was I wrong. “JFK” presents a remarkable parade of clips of home movies, raw news footage, police dispatches and local Dallas coverage — much of it never before aired. And it does so in chronological order and entirely without narration.

The lack of voiceover gives the stream of footage incredible power. Nobody’s telling you what happened or how you’re supposed to interpret it, and this frees the viewer to re-experience a moment of local chaos, national trauma and a time when the fledgling medium of TV news was just figuring itself out.

While presented in a minute-by-minute fashion, the clips arrive weird, raw and jumbled. The documentary often seems like a video version of an archaeological dig, with the editors trying to make sense of so many broken shards of pottery.

A stripper from Jack Ruby’s Carousel club appears on a talk show just hours after the arrest of the assassin’s assassin. We hear a clip from a radio broadcast of a Philharmonic orchestra as the conductor announces the president’s murder to a thunderous gasp from the audience, before leading the musicians in an impromptu performance of a Beethoven funeral march. A friend of Jack Ruby suggests that he saw Lee Harvey Oswald in his nightclub just a week before the assassination. Local correspondents insist on calling the alleged shooter Lee Harold Oswald.

We also learn from a number of clips that, contrary to TV legend, Walter Cronkite did not break the news of the president’s death, but that it dribbled out from various sources, with the tentative nature of a horrible rumor nobody wanted to believe.

Again, take this from a jaded Kennedy buff, confirmed history nut and professional media junkie: “JFK” is hypnotic, powerful, spellbinding stuff.”

Just hours before his death, John F. Kennedy appeared before a crowd in Fort Worth, Texas in what would be his final speech, delivering one last homage to American freedom.

This poignant moment is part of a vast historical record of sights and sounds captured on camera during those catastrophic days. The Zapruder film is only the beginning; much more archival material of the events surrounding the assassination exists.

This two-part special uses unique, rarely seen and heard footage to document the Kennedy assassination and the nearly 50 years of speculation and controversy that changed America. This material comes from a range of sources including eyewitness home movies, Dallas police dispatch radio recordings, and raw news footage. Part 1 is a shocking, unflinching look at the assassination of the President and the days that followed.

The second part of the special documenting the JFK assassination examines the aftermath, and the enduring controversies that emerged as succeeding generations of Americans struggled to comprehend the sudden murder of an unforgettable leader.

There are some clips available on youtube to view scenes from Part One.

We Will Overthrow The Government’ — Calls For Violence Repeatedly Stoked By Conservative Voices

Posted by Audiegrl

Anybody who is not taking the radical right-wing seriously, needs to start keeping it real. Listen to the man from Oklahoma who tells radio host Mike Signorile how his group of 200 fellow Oklahomans plan to come to Washington to ‘bear arms‘ and participate in a coup to overthrow the government. Listen to the crying woman who tells Signorile that her own mother is harboring racists thoughts and praying for “Jesus to come back and overthrow Barack Obama.”

Its time for elected politicians, political pundits, bloggers, and everybody else to stop pretending that extremist threats against our President, are just the ravings of lunatics. As any student of history can tell you, we are hearing the same inflammatory rhetoric that preceded the assassinations of Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and more recently Dr. George Tiller.

The time for pretending is over. We all need to report any threats we hear or read to the Secret Service immediately. The cowardly people who make these threats think they can hide from justice behind their phones and computers, lets show them just how wrong they are.

ThinkProgress/Lee Fang—Last week, the right-wing media outlet Newsmax — which receives 4 million unique monthly visitors and 130,000 print subscribers — published a column by conservative author John Perry arguing that a military coup could “resolve” the “radical left…Obama problem.” After being widely criticized, Newsmax retracted the column. However, the column appears to have encouraged an already angry group of anti-Obama radicals who have been plotting violence against the government.

While discussing the Newsmax column on his XM Sirius radio show last week, Michelangelo Signorile heard from a caller, “Jim from Oklahoma,” who explained that the idea of a coup is already being planned.

It’s time for all of us to contact the Secret Service anytime we read a threat against the President or his family on the Internet. In this country it is illegal to make a threat against the POTUS. This is the only way we are going to help stop this climate of hate.

Secret Service: Facebook Poll No Threat to Obama

Associated Press/Eileen Sullivan—The Secret Service has determined that a juvenile was behind the online survey that asked whether people thought President Barack Obama should be assassinated, an agency spokesman said Thursday.

No criminal charges will be filed against the juvenile or the juvenile’s parents, spokesman Edwin Donovan said. Donovan would not identify the names of the child or parents or say where they are from.

The poll, posted Saturday on Facebook, was taken off the popular social networking site quickly after company officials were alerted to its existence. But, like any threat against the president, Secret Service agents took no chances.

The poll asked respondents “Should Obama be killed?” The choices: No, Maybe, Yes, and Yes if he cuts my health care.

Facebook Poll: “Kill Obama?” Pulled Down, Secret Service Investigating

Posted by Audiegrl

Late last night, blogger GottaLaff at The Political Carnival broke this story and contacted the Secret Service. It’s shocking that some person posted a poll on whether President Obama should be killed.

Now is the time for every sane person on the Internet to stop this madness. Enough is enough. Thanks to bloggers on The Political Carnival, DKos, and Pam’s House Blend, the Secret Service received many calls and the poll was removed by Facebook.

According to Greg Sargent’s Plum Line Blog:

The Secret Service is investigating the circumstances surrounding an eye-opening Facebook poll that asked whether Obama should be assassinated, a Secret Service spokesman confirms to us.

“We are taking the appropriate investigative steps,” the spokesman, Ed Donovan, told our reporter, Amanda Erickson. “We are aware of it.”

-snip-

The poll, of course, is only the latest example of the sort of viral incitement to violence that flares up when the sparks of anti-Obama hatred are fed oxygen by the bellows of the Internets. While anyone can put up such a poll, this kind of stuff is a sign of the moment — as David Kurtz put it, it’s akin to graffiti on the virtual wall of our times.

Talking Points Memo reports that:

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt tells TPM: “The application that enabled a user to create the offensive poll was brought to our attention this morning and was disabled. We’re following up [with] the developer to ensure the offending content has been removed and that they have better procedures in place going forward to monitor their user-generated content.”

The blogger GottaLaff from The Political Carnival received a thank-you call from the Secret Service:

Just now, I got a phone call from the Secret Service. Yes, that Secret Service. It was from a very sweet woman with a very sweet voice. She called to thank me for my screen grab of the poll, and said without it, they wouldn’t have been able to address the matter.

I asked if the reason the poll was removed was due to the Secret Service following up on my call. She said she couldn’t answer that, because it would have been another officer who was working on it, and she simply didn’t know. But she thanked me over and over, emphatically, saying that there would be no way for the Secret Service to catch something like this without assistance. The Internets are too vast for that.

Instead, they rely on people like us to help them out. Sounds awfully grassrootsy, doesn’t it? Almost community service-like. Imagine that.

We would like to thank you too, GottaLaff.

It’s time for all of us to contact the Secret Service anytime we read a threat against the President or his family on the Internet. In this country it is illegal to make a threat against the POTUS. This is the only way we are going to help stop this climate of hate.
