82nd Academy Awards® Dance Auditions Photos

Telecast producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic held open dance auditions for the 82nd Academy Awards® telecast on January 22nd & 23rd.

The dancers chosen will perform live during the Academy Awards show on Sunday, March 7, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®. The auditions were open to professional-level male and female dancers in the contemporary and hip-hop styles who were between the ages of 18 and 30. Shankman, who began his career as a dancer and once performed on the Oscar show, will be choreographing the audition numbers with associate choreographers Anne Fletcher and Jamal Sims.

Danette Herman Named Coordinating Producer for Oscar® Telecast

Producer Danette Herman

Danette Herman will serve as coordinating producer for the 82nd Academy Awards®, telecast producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic announced today.

Danette is a key ally for Adam and me as we plan out the talent aspects of the show,” said Mechanic. ”She’s a wealth of knowledge and will be a great creative resource for us.”

I don’t think it’s possible to underestimate the challenges a show the size and scale of the Oscars®,” said Shankman. “Danette is a warrior.”

A specialist in live and taped television specials and events, Herman has served in various capacities on the Academy Awards telecast for more than 30 years. She served as co-producer for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ inaugural Governors Awards, held in November 2009, and subsequently completed her duties as coordinating producer for “The 32nd Kennedy Center Honors.” Also in 2009, Herman served as co-producer for “The 61st Primetime Emmy® Awards” and recently wrapped work on “CNN Heroes.”

Dancers Wanted for 2009 Oscar® Show

Open dance auditions for the 82nd Academy Awards® telecast will be held on Friday, January 22, and Saturday, January 23, at CenterStaging in Burbank, California, telecast producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic announced today. Cast dancers will perform live during the Academy Awards show on Sunday, March 7, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®.

The auditions are open to professional-level male and female dancers in the contemporary and hip-hop styles who are between the ages of 18 and 30. Shankman, who began his career as a dancer and once performed on the Oscar show, will be choreographing the audition numbers with associate choreographers Anne Fletcher and Jamal Sims.

CenterStaging is located at 3407 Winona Avenue in Burbank. Interested dancers should note that parking is not available at CenterStaging. Individuals will need to find parking in the vicinity and pay any associated costs. Only qualified dancers will be admitted; there is no access for watching the auditions.

Palette Narrows to 7 in Oscar® Make-up Race

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that seven films remain in competition in the Make-up category for the 82nd Academy Awards®.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

District 9
In 1982, a massive star ship bearing a bedraggled alien population appeared over Johannesburg, South Africa. Twenty-eight years later, the initial welcome by the human population has faded. The extraterrestrial race is forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth and find a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology.

Il DivoIl Divo
The story of Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, who has been elected Prime Minister, by Parliament, seven times since it was established in 1946. The narration spans the period since the seventh election of Andreotti as Prime Minister of Italy in 1992, until the trial in which he was accused of collusion with the Mafia.

The Imaginarium of Doctor ParnassusThe Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Immortal thousand-year-old Doctor Parnassus leads a travelling theatre troupe offering audience members a chance to go beyond reality through a magical mirror in his possession. Parnassus had been able to guide the imagination of others through a deal with the Devil, who now comes to collect on the arrangement.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the SmithsonianNight at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
When the Museum of Natural History is closed for upgrades and renovations, the museum pieces are moved into federal storage at the famous Washington Museums. The centerpiece of the film will be bringing to life the Smithsonian Institution, which houses the world’s largest museum complex with more than 136 million items in its collections.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. The Young VictoriaThe Young Victoria
The film is Jean-Marc Vallee’s dramatization of the turbulent early years of Queen Victoria’s rule, which began when she was just 18 years old, and her enduring romance and marriage to Prince Albert. The film brings their relationship to life, all while playing out against a background of family strife and political wrangling.

On Saturday, January 23, all members of the Academy’s Make-up Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.
