President Obama rumbles with House GOP

Cameras Roll As Obama Schools Republicans

BALTIMORE — President Barack Obama on Friday accused Republicans of portraying health care reform as a “Bolshevik plot” and telling their constituents that he’s “doing all kinds of crazy stuff that’s going to destroy America.”

Speaking to House Republicans at their annual policy retreat here, Obama said that over-the-top GOP attacks on him and his agenda have made it virtually impossible for Republicans to address the nation’s problems in a bipartisan way.

“What happens is that you guys don’t have a lot of room to negotiate with me,” Obama said. “The fact of the matter is, many of you, if you voted with the administration on something, are politically vulnerable with your own base, with your own party because what you’ve been telling your constituents is, ‘This guy’s doing all kinds of crazy stuff that’s going to destroy America.’ ”

Obama’s comments came in the midst of an extraordinary back-and-forth with Republican House members – a scene straight out of the House of Commons that played out live on cable TV.

President Obama traveled to a House Republican retreat in Baltimore on Friday and delivered a performance that was at once defiant, substantive and engaging. For roughly an hour and a half, Obama lectured GOP leaders and, in a protracted, nationally-televised question-and-answer session, deflected their policy critiques, corrected their misstatements and scolded them for playing petty politics.

“So effective was the president that Fox News cut away from the broadcast 20 minutes before it ended”

Today the President did something unusual in American politics – initiated an open dialogue with members of the opposite party. Visiting the House Republican retreat, he took questions on anything they wanted to talk about. He heard them out, acknowledged where they were right, and gave a genuine explanation where he felt they were wrong.

It’s worth noting that the President is looking to answer your questions as well. That’s why immediately after the State of the Union, we partnered with YouTube to give you an opportunity to ask questions of the President. Go and ask whatever you want, or just vote on other questions that your fellow citizens have submitted, and the President will answer some of those questions in a unique live event on Monday at

  1. They should have asked CNN’s Ed Henry about asking the President a stupid, factually incorrect, loaded, question.

Ed’s face is still red from the President’s reply to him last year.

March 24, 2009–CNN correspondent Ed Henry asking why it took him days to express outrage over the bonuses paid to executives at AIG.

“It took us a couple of days because I like to know what I’m talking about before I speak,” Obama replied.

  2. How it went down this afternoon…for those who missed it:

  4. Don’t ya luv the Gopper stating “the old annual deficits under ReThugs are now monthly deficits under the Democrats” and that ‘gimme a fucking break grin from PBO…..he’s now lying in wait for this dimwit to get done.

  5. spirit_55z

Luke knows damn well the Gop weren’t happy with President Obama’s brilliant smackdown. No fucking way!

The GOP will neva allow cameras in the room again..

  6. And YOU know it’s not TRUE!

…. can we swear over here? I forget; famous for swearing AND forgetting!

  7. Check this tweet, audiegirl

I love that so many people want to see Obama’s GOP talk that they’ve crashed CSPAN’s servers. Has that ever happened before? 29 minutes ago from TweetDeck “

    • Good for the Prez! When people are allowed to speak the truth, unfettered by the media and pundits, its amazing how many people want to listen. I don’t need a pundit on CNN or MSNBC to tell me the important parts of a speech, I have ears, eyes, and a brain. I can figure out that for my damn self 😉

  8. This is a really good quote from a poster at Ezra Klein’s blog, thought I’d share it:

Obama is a really, really good President. He’s very good at his job.

His problem is a structurally dysfunctional legislature and press, which keeps him from the real-world problems he really needs to solve. Today was a good opportunity for him, because neither the media nor the political process were able to get in the way. And he was able to say “no, you’re wrong when you use that number. And you know you’re wrong. And you need to stop doing that or we’re never going to get anywhere.”

  9. Damn! Nailed it.

“His problem is a structurally dysfunctional legislature and press….”

  10. Hat tip Miranda 🙂

    Perfect headline from Sam Stein:

Obama Goes To GOP Lions’ Den — And Mauls The Lions

  11. That first picture is PRICELESS!

PBO: “You talkin’ to me? You. Talkin’. To. Me??”

  12. Gee, is Fox covering this at all?

    • Clusterfox has on Karl Rove 😉 And CNN is trying to catch up

    • Faux-progressive sites? crickets 😉

      • that’s just strange. At least Huffpost is giving it top billing.

        • Some folks just can’t let go of the anger. Instead of admitting they were wrong, they just ignore a story that every Democrat on earth should be cheering about today. The President succeeded in taking the spin from the MSM filter, and speak the truth for 85 minutes unfiltered.

The GOP should have asked the ghost of Dick Nixon about letting a charismatic/intelligent president go on national TV against the sour-ass looking republicans…who ever agreed to let the cameras into the Q & A, is now unemployed. LOL 😉

  13. From David Axelrod

    Dear Friend,

This was a week where we at the White House were reminded more than ever of why we came to work for this President.

On Wednesday, President Obama delivered his State of the Union address, laying out his priorities for jumpstarting job creation, fighting to restore economic security for American families and changing the way business is done in Washington.

But then on Friday something remarkable happened — with much less fanfare. The President visited House Republicans at their retreat and answered their questions directly for most of an hour. It was an honest and unscripted discussion where the President took their questions and concerns seriously, acknowledged where they had valid points, and explained genuinely where he felt they were wrong.

In short, it was something that for many Americans has seemed all but inconceivable in American politics — a real discussion with honest disagreements about the challenges we face.

  14. I have to admit the Parliamentary system is allot more entertaining, and maybe even more effective, than what we peddle in here.

  15. I am LOVING this special on MSNBC…

  16. Lake Lady

As some of you all know I have been mad at the President a lot this year. Not tonight! I’m going to bed with a smile on my face for the first time in a long time. He kicked their butts!! 🙂

    • Right on LL! 🙂

so glad you spoke up on this one… I was having a hard time figuring how anyone could not be proud of the Presidents on this one.

still, we need more of the same… and give an ear to the progressives as well.

  17. lynnette

I thought Obama was fantastic. He was very skillful in painting the other side into a corner and making them look small while at the same time showing a reach across the aisle. This is the President I voted for. I want to see him come out like this more often. Bravo. I feel like Lake Lady does – more hopeful.

    • they really did end up looking very petty… and disingenuous about being willing to compromise… you can’t compromise with NO 🙂

loved the Marsha Blackburn Palin impression..

it was like: ‘what did she just say…?”
