“What exactly HAS President Obama accomplished in the first 10 months?”

blogpost by avitar GeoT

“He’s Done NOTHING he promised to do”

“He’s Done NOTHING he promised to do” I hear and read that basic comment over and over again in reference to the year-to-date performance of President Obama and his administration. Granted, people are frustrated, and some are angry with the lack of finality (and clarity) on the health care reform bill and DADT, DOMA and other very important issues.
But let’s take a deep breath, and for the sake of perspective at least, look at what has already been accomplished amidst the din and discord of 2009. Some of these listed are more meaningful than others and mean more to some groups than others, some may dismiss them out of hand. The point is we are moving forward towards hopefully common goals and hopefully towards some semblance of unity as Democrats, liberals, progressives… like family we’ll “hug it out” eventually, at least that’s what I am looking forward to.

The old “He’s good at being “present” and the classic “He’s just a media creation” etc, are starting to pop up again and not on FoxNation but on your’s and my favorite liberal blogs.

In my opinion these are cheap shots that ignore the facts… things are getting done, even though YOUR particular issue has not been signed sealed and delivered, yet. YOUR issues are important to ME as well. I am a strong advocate for the the public option in the health care bill. Repeal the DODT policy and the DOMA? YES. And progress has been made on these issues… yes I know you want it NOW and if you don’t get it NOW then it’s “4 and OUT” for Obama, I’m seeing that one allot lately as well, from Democrats. Well, if these issues don’t get resolved, then I have some soul searching to do, but if they DO get to the President’s desk and are signed, which I believe they will… how do YOU put the the rhetorical genie back in the bottle? That’s YOUR issue now.

One last thing:
Let me add, that as promised troops are being drawn down in Iraq, that’s got to be a point of convergence for us, isn’t it? As for Afghanistan, there is one area where there is no doubt, for better or worse, the President is doing exactly what he said he would do:

“The Afghan government needs to do more. But we have to understand that the situation is precarious and urgent here in Afghanistan. And I believe this has to be our central focus, the central front, on our battle against terrorism,”

Obama said troop levels must increase in Afghanistan.

“For at least a year now, I have called for two additional brigades, perhaps three,” he told CBS. “I think it’s very important that we unify command more effectively to coordinate our military activities. But military alone is not going to be enough.”

That’s a promise many of us DON’T want him to keep….
