Facebook Poll: “Kill Obama?” Pulled Down, Secret Service Investigating

Posted by Audiegrl

Late last night, blogger GottaLaff at The Political Carnival broke this story and contacted the Secret Service. It’s shocking that some person posted a poll on whether President Obama should be killed.

Now is the time for every sane person on the Internet to stop this madness. Enough is enough. Thanks to bloggers on The Political Carnival, DKos, and Pam’s House Blend, the Secret Service received many calls and the poll was removed by Facebook.

According to Greg Sargent’s Plum Line Blog:

The Secret Service is investigating the circumstances surrounding an eye-opening Facebook poll that asked whether Obama should be assassinated, a Secret Service spokesman confirms to us.

“We are taking the appropriate investigative steps,” the spokesman, Ed Donovan, told our reporter, Amanda Erickson. “We are aware of it.”

-snip-

The poll, of course, is only the latest example of the sort of viral incitement to violence that flares up when the sparks of anti-Obama hatred are fed oxygen by the bellows of the Internets. While anyone can put up such a poll, this kind of stuff is a sign of the moment — as David Kurtz put it, it’s akin to graffiti on the virtual wall of our times.

Talking Points Memo reports that:

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt tells TPM: “The application that enabled a user to create the offensive poll was brought to our attention this morning and was disabled. We’re following up [with] the developer to ensure the offending content has been removed and that they have better procedures in place going forward to monitor their user-generated content.”

The blogger GottaLaff from The Political Carnival received a thank-you call from the Secret Service:

Just now, I got a phone call from the Secret Service. Yes, that Secret Service. It was from a very sweet woman with a very sweet voice. She called to thank me for my screen grab of the poll, and said without it, they wouldn’t have been able to address the matter.

I asked if the reason the poll was removed was due to the Secret Service following up on my call. She said she couldn’t answer that, because it would have been another officer who was working on it, and she simply didn’t know. But she thanked me over and over, emphatically, saying that there would be no way for the Secret Service to catch something like this without assistance. The Internets are too vast for that.

Instead, they rely on people like us to help them out. Sounds awfully grassrootsy, doesn’t it? Almost community service-like. Imagine that.

We would like to thank you too, GottaLaff.

It’s time for all of us to contact the Secret Service anytime we read a threat against the President or his family on the Internet. In this country it is illegal to make a threat against the POTUS. This is the only way we are going to help stop this climate of hate.

  1. It’s a valid question. It may be necessary at some point to kill the POTUS and, as such, it is worthy of discussion.

Does that mean that I think Obama should be killed? No. Doing so would only benefit the Left, since it would make him a martyr and further marginalize those who don’t want to see what he’ll do to America actually happen.

      • OK. Report me to somebody for saying that Obama shouldn’t be killed. LOL

Try Fox News or Glen Beck.

You do, perchance, remember that the US was founded in revolution and that our founding fathers, via the 2nd Amendment, guaranteed our right to do it again. Indeed, they expected us to have to do so before now.

      • actually you said:

“It’s a valid question. It may be necessary at some point to kill the POTUS and, as such, it is worthy of discussion”

what you said afterwards is CYA.

sorry Jon, in Brooklyn… “loose lips” and all that.

  2. betsmeier

Yep Jon, I’d say you are a real jerk. People like you are probably idolizers of Glenn Beck et al. Sad that we have people like this living here in the US. I guess you could say that there really are domestic terrorists and they are just as dangerous as international terrorists.

  3. GeoT,

I’m very sure that, if Bush had declared martial law after 9/11 or before the 2008 elections, most of you Liberals would feel differently about this question. It’s only Obama that you support, not America or the POTUS is general.

Americans must always consider the possibility that the government might need to be overthrown. Or have you forgotten your own fears over the last eight years?

    • You are very wrong about how I view things John Nolan. I love my country and when the Iraqi threw the shoe at Bush I objected loudly. I respect our system of government.

I don’t disrespect Republicans or Conservatives per se, I disrespect a person who advocates violence against the President (which you appear to be) to solve political differences. In this day and age the BALLOT BOX is more powerful then any gun. We are not in the wild west. After 8 years of Bush, guess what? The MAJORITY of Americans voted for our President, Barack Obama. In 2012 you’ll get another chance

Think long and hard before you bury yourself any deeper than you already are.

      • One – Obama was elected by approximately 33% of the potential electorate, not a MAJORITY of Americans. Strangely enough, voter turnout as a percentage of the eligible population was actually down from 2004.

Two – I advocate consideration of violence against a POTUS as a potentially necessary step to secure the freedom of America.

I was NOT just doing a CYA with the latter part of my original comment. I actually see no point in killing Obama.

      • Oh I see, word games. okay.

well just in case you actually mean what you say, I have forwarded your name address and phone number to the proper authorities, because I love my country and because bravado behind a keyboard is becoming a dangerous thing.

      • Well, I hope it made you feel better 😉

Analyze your thought processes though. You claim – a little too loudly perhaps – to love America, but are afraid of people speaking their minds or even discussing a question about violence against our government.

Sounds a little confused to me.

      • The only one confused is you John Nolan of Brooklyn. I am quite comfortable in speaking my mind within the context of loving my country and valuing the elective form of government that we have worked so hard, for so many years to build.
I’m not really sure what you’re advocating, specifically with your reckless call for, and I quote:

“violence against a POTUS as a potentially necessary step to secure the freedom of America”

You are advocating “discussing” violence against the duly elected President of the United States… that is not a topic for discussion that is a call to arms and violence which you appear to agree with and even promote. You will not get a “discussion” on that topic here, try Stormfront.org.

Here you will be called to take responsibility for your words and take the consequences.
