The GOP’s Top Chef Starves a Beast and Poisons a Debate

Michael Steele

Michael Steele

Posted by Audiegrl

Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, this week revealed a secret Republican plan that would end up eliminating all federal farm subsidies; closing down Yellowstone and Yosemite national parks; selling off the interstate highway system; and canceling Head Start, subsidized school lunches and the entire college loan program. Steele’s stunning announcement brings the conservative strategy of “starving the beast” to a new level. Under the guise of protecting the elderly, Republicans hope to realize their dream of eliminating half a dozen Cabinet agencies, firing tens of thousands of government workers and ending government regulation as we know it.–Steven Pearlstein, Washington Post

Sound familiar? Colorado Democratic headquarters vandalized

Provided by Thing Progress

Posted by Audiegrl

A “vandalism spree” hit the Colorado Democratic Party headquarters in Denver today, where the “vandal allegedly used a hammer to smash” 11 windows. Party Chairwoman Pat Waak attributed the violence to the intensity surrounding the health care debate, saying, “Clearly there’s been an effort on the other side to stir up hate. I think this is the consequence of it.” Waak estimated the damage at approximately $11,000. The Denver Police Department reportedly has a man in custody regarding the incident.–By Amanda Terkel @ Think Progress

What if someone had been inside headquarters? The Southern Poverty Law Center has made things pretty clear where things are heading. How soon will it be before someone gets hurt? When will the Republican leadership stand up to the fringe elements of their party? Judging from Senator Chuck Grassly’s performance today, no time soon. When faced with a constituent that said during a townhall today: “The president of the United States, that’s who you should be concerned about. Because he’s acting like a little Hitler,” said Tom Eisenhower, a World War II veteran. “I’d take a gun to Washington if enough of you would go with me.” Grassly said nothing.

More from Think Progress: In a statement, Doug Pennington, the Assistant Director of Communications at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said that “Senator Grassley should have heavily criticized that statement. He should have told Mr. Eisenhower that such barely veiled threats against the President are unpatriotic and repugnant to the American way of life.” Pennington added that “It was a credit to the Senator’s audience that they booed Mr. Eisenhower, but Senator Grassley also has a responsibility as an elected official to categorically denounce Mr. Eisenhower’s statement and the sentiment behind it.”

****Update from Talking Points Memo
Late Update: OK, the plot thickens…Gawker asserts that Ariel Attack is actually the same person as Maurice, noting the facts that only one person has been arrested, and that the anarchist posting says Ariel “is listed in the jail records and media under her birth name.” It seems like that’s probably right.

Assuming that’s true, there’s a broader implication for the story. It seemed to us in writing this post earlier that the goal of the attack was to discredit conservatives, by getting them blamed for it. That was because the one person who had been reliably reported to have been arrested had a background working for a group supportive of Democrats. But now, given that the person arrested has anarchist ties and is on the record as a vocal left-wing opponent of Obama, it looks like that interpretation was wrong. It now seems more likely that the goal was more straight-forward: to express anger at Obama and the Democrats.

Angry right boos John McCain for stating that Obama ‘respects the Constitution of the United States.’

Posted by Audiegrl

Today in a town hall forum in Arizona, an elderly woman asked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) whether President Obama knows “that we still live under a Constitution.” To his credit, McCain distanced himself from the questioner’s claim, saying “I’m sure that he does.” He then added that Obama “respects the Constitution of the United States,” at which point the crowd broke out in loud boos. But McCain stood firm, explaining that there’s just a “fundamental difference in philosophy and about the role of government.” “I am convinced the president is absolutely sincere in his beliefs,” he said, again eliciting boos and jeers from the crowd.–By Faiz Shakir @ Think Progress

I wonder if that is the same elderly lady with the red t-shirt who asked McCain if Obama was a ‘Arab’? I loved her on Saturday Night Live. 🙂
